Geocodio is an alternative to HERE geocoding

Last updated: July 14, 2026. All information regarding HERE is accurate to the best of our knowledge using information from HERE’s website as of that date.

Geocodio: A HERE Geocoding Alternative

HERE and Geocodio both provide geocoding services. Depending on your use case, one might be a better fit for you than the other.

Most geocoding providers have restrictions on how you use results from their services. Most, for example, won't allow you to store results in database.

Data from Geocodio can be cached and/or permanently stored without restriction. We do not impose any restrictions on how you use the data or how you handle it. (See our Terms of Use.)

It's important to us to try to make your work as hassle-free as possible. That's why we don't put restrictions on how you use our results. For example, a few things you can do with Geocodio that you can't do with other providers:

  • Integrate latitude and longitude into your application

  • Store customer geographic data in your database

  • Geocode your sales leads

  • Capture geodata without displaying it on a map

  • Resell geocoding

  • And many more things that are prohibited by other geocoding providers

HERE Geocoding Restrictions

The following are set out in the HERE Platform Terms (Sections 6.3, 6.4, 11, and 12.3, verified July 2026):

  • Cannot be cached or stored outside the HERE platform for more than 30 days (except results used solely for internal testing, evaluation, or audit and legal-compliance record retention)

  • Results cannot be provided to another person or entity, which rules out exporting geocodes into shared GIS platforms or datasets

  • Cannot extract sales lead information, category-specific business listings, or mailing or marketing lists

  • Cannot be used with machine learning or AI systems, including model training, predictive analytics, and generative AI

  • Cannot combine non-HERE datasets with HERE results in applications, except layering for display purposes with correct attribution

  • Cannot be integrated into vehicle systems or used for ADAS or autonomous driving functions without a specific subscription plan or agreement

  • Cannot create derivative works or use results to build a competing product

  • Must provide HERE with access to your application for review, and HERE may inspect your records on 30 days' notice

  • Must cease use and destroy HERE materials within 30 days of termination

  • Full list of restrictions

Can you store, cache or export geocoded results from HERE?

Results from HERE geocoding cannot be cached or stored outside the HERE platform for more than 30 days. The stated exceptions are results used solely for internal testing, evaluation, or record retention for audit and legal-compliance purposes. Those exceptions preserve records, but they do not license operational reuse. Results cannot be reused in production and you must make a call every time you need an address geocoded, even if you have already paid for it from HERE. At termination, HERE requires you to cease use and destroy related materials within 30 days.

Results from Geocodio are allowed be exported, stored or cached. Geocodio puts no restrictions on how you use the geocoded results. This means you only need to geocode an address or coordinate pair once from Geocodio and can store it as you wish.

How much does HERE geocoding cost vs Geocodio?

HERE's Base Plan includes 30,000 free geocoding transactions per month, then costs about $0.88 per 1,000 up to 5 million per month and about $0.70 per 1,000 from 5 to 10 million (April 2026 list prices, after HERE's announced 6% increase for new contracts and renewals). HERE's pricing pages render per account and region, so confirm exact rates in your HERE account. Geocodio includes 2,500 free lookups per day, then costs $1.00 per 1,000 pay-as-you-go, with volume discounts on prepaid credits that never expire.

The per-1,000 rates look similar. The difference is the 30-day storage cap. A team that maintains a geocoded database has to re-process the entire cumulative database with HERE every month, while with Geocodio each address is geocoded once. At 100,000 new addresses per month, that works out to roughly $6,500 in year one with HERE versus roughly $1,170 with Geocodio, and the gap nearly triples in year two as the database grows. See the full methodology and more volumes on our terms of use comparison page.

Can you use HERE geocoding in GIS platforms such as ArcGIS, Esri, Tableau, or Carto?

Not in any persistent way. HERE's 30-day storage cap, the prohibition on providing results to another person or entity, and the restriction on combining results with non-HERE datasets together rule out maintaining HERE geocodes in a GIS platform such as ArcGIS, Esri, Tableau, or Carto.

Geocodio results come with complete data freedom and can be imported into any GIS platform you like.

Can you show HERE geocoded results on a non-HERE map?

HERE's terms do not require a HERE map for display. They do restrict combining non-HERE datasets with HERE results in applications: layering your content or third-party content with HERE results is permitted for display purposes, provided the origin of the HERE content can be distinguished and correct attribution is provided (Platform Terms Section 6.4). Review the terms carefully for your specific display use case before building on them.

Geocodio results can be used with any map or map platform, with no attribution requirements. There are no restrictions on how or where you show geocoded results from Geocodio. You can use them on any map platform, including OpenStreetMaps, Mapbox, or Google Maps.

Can you use HERE geocoding for fleet tracking or navigation?

HERE actively serves automotive and logistics customers, so these use cases are not banned outright. They do require the right plan: integrating HERE materials into vehicle systems, or using them for ADAS or autonomous driving functions, is prohibited unless permitted by your specific subscription plan or a separate agreement with HERE. The 30-day storage cap still applies to results, which matters for fleets that want to keep a history of reverse-geocoded pings.

Geocodio permits fleet and asset tracking on any plan, and you can store the reverse-geocoded results permanently. Learn more about Geocodio for fleet tracking.

Are there additional HERE restrictions and prohibited use cases?

Yes. You can read HERE's full terms of service, including restrictions on geocoding, here.

Can I use HERE if I have a spreadsheet of addresses?

No, HERE geocoding is API-only.

You can geocode spreadsheets with Geocodio.
