Data Sources

Geocodio sources data from over 2,000 public data sources.

We are not reselling another geocoder's results. We have developed and continually refined our own proprietary geocoding engine over the past 10+ years. When you submit an address or coordinate pair for geocoding, our geocoding engine interprets your query and delivers a result fueled by underlying source data.

Because we have built our own geocoding engine and have combined many different data sets, results from Geocodio may be different from results from other providers. You can see more on accuracy here.

Geocodio's data sources include:

The following is a non-exhaustive list of data sources. We return the source information with all of our results.

  • Local city, county, and state datasets

  • The US Census Bureau

  • OpenStreetMap

  • GeoNames

  • CanVecPlus by Natural Resources Canada

  • StatCan

  • Legislator information from the UnitedStates project on GitHub

  • Ordnance Survey (GB)

  • Royal Mail (UK)

Notes

  • Postal codes in Canada. Please note that full postal codes in Canada are proprietary to Canada Post. Therefore, for licensing reasons, when a postal code for a Canadian location has not been provided by the user, Geocodio will return only the first three characters (FSA), which is open-source. If the user supplies a full Canadian postal code with their input, Geocodio will check that the FSA matches our internal data and, for the user’s convenience, return the user-inputted full postal code in the results. Such full postal codes have not been verified or corrected by Geocodio, nor have they been verified against official Canada Post data.
