Updates to our Privacy Policy

We updated the Cookies and Tracking section of our Privacy Policy today.

None of these updates change how we handle the data you send to our API or when you upload a spreadsheet.

What Changed

  • A new optional cookie records how you first reached geocod.io: the referring page, any campaign parameters in the link, and the page you landed on. This helps us understand which pieces of content are the most helpful for people. It’s set only after you accept and it expires after one year.

  • Updated language about what we don’t do: The new wording clarifies that we don’t follow you across other websites, sell or share your data with ad networks or data brokers, or combine users’ Geocodio data with data bought from third parties.

  • Added YouTube and SavvyCal: Two services, YouTube (Google) for videos and SavvyCal for scheduling, can receive data from the Geocodio marketing website. Both stay blocked until you allow them.

If you don’t allow embeds, you’ll see a placeholder where the video or calendar would be. Allowing embeds in the cookie notice brings them back, or you can click to load (allow) a single embed one time.

There’s also now a Cookie Settings link in the footer. It reopens the cookie banner so you can change your settings. Withdrawing consent deletes the attribution cookie. Saying no won’t impact your ability to use Geocodio.

Why We Made This Change

Individual privacy is important to us at Geocodio. It’s why our household income data append is at the Census level rather than for individual people: we don’t believe in sharing data on individual people or households, period. When we do collect data on our users, it’s for specific, time-limited, and internal purposes to help us get better.

To that end, we want to know which efforts and content help people find Geocodio, like Guides and Tutorials. Knowing that a Census tract guide is what brought someone here helps shape what we write and build next.

We use analytics tools to understand traffic, and we expect to add another one in the future. The rule our analytics tools have to meet is the same rule in our Privacy Policy: no following you across other websites, no ad network or data brokers, and no combining Geocodio data with data bought from third parties. The tools we use are named in the policy, and that list is updated when it changes.

A delightfully boring cookie banner

1 optional cookie from us
2 embeds blocked by default
0 ad tracking / data brokers

Geocodio would like to set one first-party cookie to remember how you found this site. Accepting also unblocks embedded videos and calendars, which set their own cookies.
