Geocodio Team Accounts: Now with Role-Based Access Control
Today, Geocodio is rolling out a major update to Team Accounts with more granular role-based access controls.
When we first added teams to Geocodio, there were only two access levels: administrator and member. This reflected our earliest users, who were primarily individual developers working with perhaps one or two other people. But we’ve learned from customers that it would be helpful to have more granular permissions based on someone’s position in the organization: accountants need to be able to download invoices, developers need to be able to monitor and manage instances, and compliance teams need to be able to download SOC 2 audit reports.
With this overhaul, subscription customers can now have multiple administrators and up to eight roles depending on their plan, including billing, developer and compliance roles. Plus, the invite process is much smoother.
Before we get into what’s new, a quick note:
Everyone who's already on your team stays on your team. All of your organization’s existing team members have been mapped to the closest matching role, so there is nothing you need to do unless you want to adjust permissions.
Pay-as-you-go and team accounts
The new team functionality is available for subscription accounts only and pay-as-you-go accounts are now single-user. Affected pay-as-you-go customers received a separate email with details specific to their account. If you believe you should have received that email and didn't, please contact us.
What's New
Subscription customers can now assign team members one of up to eight roles depending on their plan, each with a specific set of permissions.
| Role | Lite | Full | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owner | All permissions. The only role that can transfer ownership or delete the team account. Each team has exactly one Owner. | ||
| Admin | Everything except ownership transfer and team deletion. Manages the team, assigns roles, enforces 2FA, and accesses all resources. Multiple Admins allowed. | ||
| Developer | Creates and manages all API keys, views and uploads spreadsheets, manages their own maps, views the credit balance, manages billing, and manages instances and instance pools for Unlimited accounts. | ||
| Member | Creates their own API keys, uploads and downloads their own spreadsheets, manages their own maps, views others’ maps (read-only), and views the credit balance. Can’t view all API keys or purchase credits. | ||
| Billing | Views and edits billing, views and downloads usage, manages agreements, views and purchases credits. Can’t access the API, spreadsheets, maps, or geocoded data. | ||
| Compliance | Views and manages agreements, views and downloads audit logs, views and downloads usage. Can view or sign documents such as SOC 2 report, external penetration test reports, BAA, or DPA review. Only applies to Enterprise Flex, Enterprise Unlimited, and On-Premises. | ||
| Read-Only | View-only access to instances, usage, billing, and agreements. Can’t edit anything. Available on Enterprise Flex and Enterprise Unlimited only. | ||
| Custom | Enterprise Unlimited and On-Premises customers can create roles with a specific set of permissions. |
A Better Invite Flow
Previously, if someone already had a Geocodio account, they needed to delete their account.
Now, if you invite someone who already has a Geocodio account, they can keep it and bring it into your team directly.
How invitations work:
If they have an active paid subscription, they'll need to cancel it and let it finish before accepting.
If they’ve purchased credits, those credits move to your team's Owner when they join. They'll see a confirmation message during the invite acceptance.
If they're moving from another team, by accepting your invite, they leave that team and join yours in one step.
Easy ownership transfer
Previously, transferring the admin role on a team account meant changing the email address on the existing account.
Now there's a more efficient two-step transfer. The current Owner selects a new Owner. The new Owner accepts. Credit balance and usage history move with ownership.

Enforced 2FA
Owners and Admins can now require all team members to enable two-factor authentication. Members who haven't set it up yet are prompted to do so on their next login.
