Geocodio Now Supports Australia and New Zealand

Now live on Geocodio: geocoding, reverse geocoding, and distance calculations for Australia and New Zealand, along with Australian census and political district data

You can now geocode addresses in Australia and New Zealand with Geocodio.

Geocodio’s coverage for Australia and New Zealand includes:

  • Addresses to coordinates, including address correction, standardization, and parsing

  • Reverse geocoding

  • Data enrichment (timezones, Australian Census and political district data),

  • Distance calculations (typical driving distance and driving time as well as as-the-crow-flies distance)

With this addition, Geocodio now supports geocoding, address correction, and data enrichment in six countries: the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Geocodio's Australia and New Zealand Coverage

Forward geocoding

Turn an address into latitude and longitude, with rooftop precision where available (see below for more on accuracy).

  • API: Pass  addresses to the /geocode endpoint. View docs

  • Spreadsheet uploads: Upload a spreadsheet of addresses and get coordinates back, no code required.

  • Maps: Geocode and map addresses, and overlay electoral districts and census geographies in Geocodio Maps.

Reverse geocoding

Turn latitude/longitude coordinates into the nearest address using the API or spreadsheet uploads.

You can also do batch geocoding: send up to 10,000 addresses in a single API request, or use the Lists API to geocode spreadsheets (up to 1 GB).

Distance calculations

Calculate driving distances and travel times between Australian or New Zealand locations.

As with every country Geocodio supports, you can store and reuse your results.

Australian data enrichment

Geocodio’s Australian data appends allow you to group locations by metropolitan area, see which electoral districts they fall into, gather the median household income, and more.

When requested, each append adds data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) or Geoscape to every Australian address you geocode. Data enrichment is available via API and spreadsheet upload.

Here’s the current list:

Append Field name What you get
Census Geographies 'au-census' State, Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA), SA1 to SA4, Mesh Block, Remoteness Area, Section of State, Urban Centre and Locality, and Significant Urban Area
Demographics 'au-demographics' Total population by sex, population by age range, median age, average household size, and Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander population
Housing 'au-housing' Home ownership, median weekly rent, median monthly mortgage repayment, and average number of people per bedroom
Income 'au-income' Census median weekly personal, family, and household income. Median annual total income and number of earners from tax records (“Personal Income”*). All four SEIFA socio-economic indexes, with score and decile
Federal Electorates 'au-federal-electorate' The Commonwealth Electoral Division each address sits in today, with its ABS code and Open Civic Data (OCD) ID. Add 'au-federal-electorate-next' for boundaries already set for the next federal election.
State Electorates 'au-state-electorate' The state or territory lower house electoral district, including ACT Legislative Assembly electorates

If you’re joining these appends to your own data, here is some additional detail that may be helpful:

  • SA1 to SA4 are Statistical Areas Levels 1 to 4, the ABS's standard geographies. An SA1 is roughly the size of a US Census Block Group, UK Output Area, or Canadian Dissemination Block, with 200 to 800 people. An SA2 is closer to a suburb and roughly equivalent to a US or Canadian Census Tract or UK MSOA. See more in the guide.

  • Demographics, housing, and income look like Geocodio's ACS appends. Each table has a readable name and returns a value and a percentage for every row.

  • Census data is from the most recent Census (2021). Australia held its 2026 Census in August, and the ABS expects to release most results in June 2027. We will add 2026 data after it has been released.

  • Electorates use current boundaries by default. Where new boundaries have already been set for the next election (South Australia, Tasmania, and the ACT so far), au-federal-electorate-next returns those, too. If an address could fall in more than one electorate, Geocodio returns each one ranked by likelihood, the same as our other electoral district appends.

Data appends are available for Australian addresses only for now. If you’d like census or other data for New Zealand addresses, let us know what you need.

Accuracy

Based on two real-world, uncleaned test lists we ran of Woolworth’s and BP locations downloaded from All the Places:

  • 75% came back as rooftop or nearest rooftop match

  • 67% were within 250m of the store’s own pin

(We did not check the store’s own pin against a third-party geocoder, as most commercial geocoders prohibit us from publishing benchmarking.)

We encourage you to run a free test to see if our results will work for you. The first 2,500 lookups per day are free on our Pay-as-you-go plan.

Pricing and Access

Every plan has access to Australian and New Zealand data.

Lookups in AU and NZ cost the same as addresses in every other country Geocodio supports: one lookup (or credit) per address. Each extra data field counts as an additional lookup.

Coming soon: Pay in $AUD and $NZD

We’re working on expanding our self-service capability to pay in more currencies. In the meantime, we can set it up manually. If you’d like to pay in $AUD or $NZD, please contact us.

Data sources and updated terms: still as permissive as possible

One of the key reasons many people choose Geocodio is that we allow you to store the results. Results storage beyond a temporary cache is prohibited by most geocoding services, and if other geocoders do allow you to store data longer than 30 days, it’s typically significantly more expensive.

With each country expansion, we endeavor to source the highest-quality data with the most flexible terms.

Licensing note for Australian addresses

G-NAF's license doesn't allow you to use its addresses to create or compile mailing lists unless you independently check that each address can receive mail.

Licensing note for New Zealand

New Zealand Post updates their postal codes twice per year, and as a result, their license requires that postal codes only be used for six months, as they might change. You’re still allowed to store them permanently, however. And NZ postal codes may only be used by commercial users for internal use.

Please see our updated Terms of Service and Privacy Statement for full details. Continued use of Geocodio means you accept these terms.

If you have a custom contract, you’ll need to execute an amendment to accept the new Australia and New Zealand licensing terms. Please contact [email protected] for details.

Try Geocodio’s Australia and New Zealand support with your addresses

The proof is in the pudding, so why not take our new Australia and New Zealand coverage for a spin yourself?

You can already start geocoding Australian or New Zealand addresses. No additional configuration is required, and your first 2,500 lookups each day are free with our pay-as-you-go plan.

Australia and New Zealand geocoding, address correction, and the Australian Census and electoral district appends, are all available via API and spreadsheet upload.

  • When starting from addresses (forward geocoding), include the country in your API request or formatted spreadsheet.

  • AU, Australia, NZ, and New Zealand are all accepted.

For Australian data appends, add one or more of au-census, au-demographics, au-housing, au-income, au-federal-electorate, au-federal-electorate-next, or au-state-electorate to the fields parameter. You can combine multiple appends in a single request:

curl "https://api.geocod.io/v2/geocode?q=83+Torrens+Street,+Braddon+ACT+2612&country=AU&fields=au-census,au-demographics,au-federal-electorate&api_key=YOUR_API_KEY"

If you’re geocoding a spreadsheet, pick the appends you want in the Data Appends step after you upload your file, and Geocodio adds them as new columns.
