February 23, 2026Geocodio has just deployed a follow-up optimization on the last geocoding engine upgrade that delivers significant additional speed improvements to both forward and reverse geocoding.
Quick summary: In November, we shared that our 2025 Geocoding Engine Upgrade delivered better accuracy and a 5% performance boost across the board. That upgrade involved six months of engineering work to rebuild core parts of Geocodio's geocoding engine, laying the groundwork for what we're announcing today.
We've just deployed a follow-up optimization that delivers significant additional speed improvements to both forward and reverse geocoding. Combined, these updates mean that compared to a year ago, forward geocoding is now 104% faster and reverse geocoding is 186% faster.
Forward geocoding—converting an address to coordinates—is a computationally-intensive process from an engineering perspective, as we’re taking a string of text, parsing it, and converting it into something usable by our geocoding engine. There are many different ways that an address can be written correctly, nevermind misspelled or jumbled.
Forward geocoding now processes requests 20% faster than it did after our November upgrade.
| Requests/Hour | Improvement vs 2025 | Improvement vs 2024 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-2025 Upgrade | 200,000 | ||
| With 2025 Upgrade | 340,000 | 70% | |
| With 2026 Upgrade (Now) | 408,000 | 20% | 104% |
This means forward geocoding is 104% faster than it was a year ago, and effectively means that Geocodio Unlimited customers now have the throughput of two instances for the price of one.
From a technical perspective, reverse geocoding—converting coordinates to addresses—is a more efficient process, as we don’t have to parse and correct text. It’s therefore always been faster than forward geocoding.
With this update, reverse geocoding saw an even larger gain. Throughput has increased by 68%, nearly doubling the number of requests processed in the same time window. Looking at both upgrades, reverse geocoding is now 186% faster than it was a year ago.
| Requests/Hour | Improvement vs 2025 | Improvement vs 2024 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-2025 Upgrade | 320,000 | ||
| With 2025 Upgrade | 535,000 | 67% | |
| With 2026 Upgrade (Now) | 901,000 | 68% | 186% |
Our November engine upgrade introduced architectural changes to how Geocodio processes and ranks geocoding results. As a continuation of that work, we also made extensive code-level optimizations throughout the geocoding pipeline.
With this latest release, we've further optimized our underlying database to reduce its footprint and streamline how address data is retrieved during geocoding. The result: less data to search through per request and faster response times across the board.
As with our November performance upgrade, these improvements are already live. You don't need to change or request anything!
Whether you're geocoding in real-time via the single endpoint, running high volume through the batch, or lists endpoints, or uploading spreadsheets, you'll benefit from faster processing times.
For Geocodio Unlimited customers with dedicated instances, these throughput gains translate directly to higher daily processing capacity.
This is the second major performance improvement we've shipped in recent months, and we're not done. The architectural work from our 2025 engine upgrade continues to unlock new opportunities for speed, accuracy, and new features. Stay tuned.
