Geocodio can now return state legislator information, such as names, party, and contact information, when you append state legislative districts. We've also improved district naming conventions.
We've made several updates and additions to our state legislative district data append. You can now get state legislator information (such as names and contact information), and we've also updated our district names to reflect local conventions.
To support these changes in a backwards-compatible way, we've released them under a new API version, v1.9. API users will need to update their API version in order to get this data. Please see our changelog for more.
Whenever you request state legislative districts from Geocodio, you'll now have the option to add legislator data, regardless of whether you're uploading a spreadsheet of addresses or using our API.
The following data can be returned. Note that not all data is available for all legislators (for example, some legislators do not have a YouTube channel.)
When geocoding a spreadsheet, click the box that says "Add state legislator info?". The state legislators' names, parties, contact information, and more will be added as additional columns to your spreadsheet.
With the Geocodio API, state legislator data is automatically returned whenever you use the stateleg
data append. See our documentation for more.
We've also updated how we name state legislative districts to make them more consistent with the naming used within each state.
Most noticeably, we have removed the "state" prefix (so State House District 5 => House District 5.)
Some states already had local district naming, such as Nebraska ("Legislative District #").
In doing this update, we found that there can be inconsistency in how districts are described within a state. For example, in Connecticut, districts are sometimes described on legislators' own websites as either "8th General Assembly District" or "House District 21." Where there are discrepancies, we have looked at state legisatures' websites as well as local news to determine the most commonly-used way of describing districts.
