2025 Geocoding Engine Upgrade: Better Accuracy and Faster Performance

Quick summary: Geocodio has recently deployed a major update to the Geocodio geocoding engine that brings improvements to both accuracy and performance. This update reflects six months of engineering work to rebuild core parts of Geocodio's infrastructure and geocoding engine. As a result, Geocodio's geocoding engine now achieves an average accuracy score of 0.9810 out of 1.0, with 1.6% more addresses returning perfect confidence matches and 57% fewer low-precision fallbacks to city or ZIP-level results. Geocodio also geocodes faster: Unlimited customers now have 5% higher throughput for forward and reverse geocoding for their dedicated instances. This upgrade lays the foundation for new features Geocodio will be rolling out in the coming year.

What's Improved

More Accurate Geocoding from Geocodio

Geocodio returns two different accuracy metrics with every geocoded result: an accuracy score (numerical value 0-1) and an accuracy type (from "place" to "rooftop") with every result. Using the accuracy score and accuracy type together allow you to filter results and see if they'll work for your use case.

Geocodio's updated geocoding engine delivers accuracy score and accuracy type improvements for both US and Canadian addresses:

• 1.6% more perfect-score ("1") results: More addresses now return the highest confidence match.
• 57% reduction in low-precision fallbacks. This means fewer addresses fall back to city or ZIP-level matches ("place.")
• Increase in the average accuracy score from 0.9733 to 0.9810: This means better overall accuracy across all geocoding requests.

These improvements mean you more precise coordinates for the addresses you geocode, with fewer instances where we have to fall back to broader geographic areas.

Faster Geocoding from Geocodio

Geocodio's updated geocoding engine also delivers performance improvements:

• 5% increased throughput on average for forward and reverse geocoding operations
• Improved response times across all geocoding endpoints

Whether you're using our single endpoint for real-time geocoding, using the batch or lists API endpoints for large batches, or geocoding spreadsheets via file upload, you should see these performance improvements.

This means that Geocodio Unlimited customers, who receive dedicated instance(s) of the Geocodio platform for their organization's private use, now have 5% higher throughput. Each instance can now process 5.15M lookups per day—if not better—when optimized with batch processing.

If you're already using Geocodio, you don't need to do anything. These improvements are already working for you.

We began the rollout in October and it is already live and working behind the scenes for all self-service and Enterprise customers across all API versions and plan types.
